Written, distilled, and recorded over a decade of American political and cultural backlash, it is perhaps fitting that Beet the System’s debut full-length album is all about grappling with endings. These decompositions, both personal and societal, are a journey into embracing the cyclical decay of all living beings, things, and ideas as an essential nutrient for revival and redemption.
A smorgasbord of boundary-defying sounds ranging from soulful ballads and groovy beats to oddball segues and straight up rock, this suite of songs is what Bay Area fans have come to expect from the Beets: a tapestry of cross pollinating ear worms that wander through the musical universe but always return to making meaning from the dreaming.
This is as close to a concept album as you get in the age of short attention spans. It’s an ever-fermenting series of queries that straddle the edge of the precipice without ever losing their sense of humor, wonder, and redemption. Throughout, there is reassurance that it’s okay to compost away every now and then. That there is salvation in the salvage. If, after we get through this mire, we all go write a new song.
